This day in space historyAstronauts

On November 2, 2000, Expedition 1 arrived at the International Space Station: NASA’s William Shepherd and Russian cosmonauts Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko. The three spent 136 days aboard, switching on the station’s systems and fixing equipment that malfunctioned.

Their arrival began an unbroken human presence in orbit. Crews have rotated through the station ever since, so for 26 years there has not been a single day without people in space. Anyone younger than 26 has never lived in a world where that was not true.
