This day in space historyDwarf Planets & Small Bodies
On November 7, 1492, a stone fell from the sky into a wheat field outside the walled town of Ensisheim, in Alsace, now part of France. The Ensisheim meteorite is a stony meteorite that weighed 127 kg (280 pounds) and dug a hole about 1 meter deep on impact.
It is the oldest recorded stony European meteorite fall from which some of the meteorite still survives. Part of it can still be seen in the Musée de la Régence, a sixteenth-century museum in Ensisheim.
