In 1966, the Soviet Union sent Luna 10, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Moon. It spent 56 days circling before eventually crashing. Today, there are still a few active lunar satellites, including NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been mapping the Moon’s surface since 2009.
