Despite what sci-fi movies show, the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter is mostly empty space. The asteroids are spread so far apart that if you were standing on one, you probably wouldn’t see another nearby. A spacecraft flying through the belt has an incredibly low chance of hitting anything—unless it’s aiming for a specific asteroid on purpose
